Observed each year on June 20th is National American Eagle Day. The Bald Eagle is both the national bird and it is part of the national emblem of the United States of America and appears on its Seal. The bald eagle was chosen as one of the emblems on the great seal of the United States in June 20, 1782, because of its long life, great strength and majestic looks. At the time, it was also thought to exist only on the North American continent. Congress chose the American Bald Eagle to be our national bird in 1784 (instead of a Turkey which Benjamin Franklin proposed).
As the design went on to appear on official documents, currency, flags, public buildings and other government-related items, the bald eagle became an American icon.
National American Eagle Day is sponsored by The American Eagle Foundation (AEF) in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee,
AEF has succeeded in generating support for American Eagle Day from the Governors of 42 states, as well as the House and the Senate.
