“Enhancing the Lives of Children Through the Power of Music”
Twenty years ago, I started Music Sweet Music because of volunteering with the Music Therapist at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg FL. I saw firsthand the difference that music made in lives of hospitalized children, how it calmed them and reduced their stress, and how they – at least for a short time through the power of music were emotionally removed from their surroundings and able to be kids again. I quickly learned the very distinct difference between performing music, teaching music and using Music as Medicine.
Music Therapy is a clinical discipline in which music is used to address nonmusical goals.
Dr. Oliver Sacks, a renowned neurologist, psychologist and author (Awakenings, among other books) at Columbia University Medical Center has said, “The power of music is very remarkable… I think that music therapy and music therapists are crucial and indispensable in institutions…”
I have written, recorded, and performed as a musician and taught students how to play music, but I leave the prescribed use of music as medicine to qualified therapists. Music Sweet Music’s team of board-certified music therapists represent highly qualified and dedicated professionals.
Music…Sweet Music remains committed to making a difference to those who we serve. A relatively high percentage of our hospitalized children never make it to adulthood. Yet, our board-certified music therapists provide an important element, a type of specialized music psychotherapy, that allows our children to communicate more freely and improve the quality of even a short-lived life.
We give our sincere thanks to those who have supported Music…Sweet Music for the past 20 years. Your support has enabled us to bring about real and positive change. Together we are making a difference. Together we will continue to make a difference.
